What Blooms in the Fall: Natural Beauties
With the hottest days of summer behind us, fall gives us some of the most beautiful blooms for this bustling part of the wedding season. If you’re looking for rich, dramatic, colorful florals, and luscious, vibrant, leaves, herbs, and shrubs, this list is it.
These are some of our favorite, show-stopping, — “ohhh, what kind of flower is that?” — fall beauties.
Anemones
Commonly referred to as windflowers, anemones have characteristically dark centers that are framed by beautiful and delicate soft petals. They come in a multitude of colors including white, red, indigo, yellow, purple and blue and each color holds a symbolic meaning that varies from culture to culture.
Copper Beech
A fall favorite, the leaves of this tree are glossy and have an almost metallic-like shine to them. They display varying shades of orange, copper, dark brown and sometimes purple and are perfect for deeply colored fall palettes and outdoor weddings.
Helenium
The large, bright faces of these flowers are known to mimic the sunset and can add some of that moodiness to a large arrangement or outdoor focal piece. Similar to daisies, these flowers dry quickly and beautifully, retaining a lot of their charm and color. If you’re thinking about hanging or pressing your wedding bouquet, heleniums are a beautiful option to consider.
Roses
These beauties never need an introduction. There are over three hundred species, with endless varieties and countless possibilities. These classic beauties go well with every color palette and every theme and because they’re naturally grown in so many different colors. Uncommon color options include deep pink, burgundy, orange, cream and black.
Scabiosa
Also called “pincushion flowers”, scabiosas are known for their delicate, papery seed pods that fill the center of the flower. The surrounding petals come in shades of pink, purple and even red which help fill out bouquets and centerpieces while adding a touch of softness at the same time.
Yarrow
Slender and sturdy stems produce an abundance of broad, flat-topped flower clusters that are comprised of dozens of smaller, tiny, daisy-like florets. These clusters bloom in yellow, white, red, pink and orange and are perfect for wildflower-themed arrangements.
Aster
Derived from the Latin word for “star”, these beauties have a yellow center and are surrounded by pink, blue, purple or white petals. Asters are loved for their nectar-rich blooms, and are a favorite for Monarch butterflies who love to make an appearance towards the end of fall season.
Freesia
These flowers bloom on long, curved stems and are available in shades of pink, purple, red, yellow and white. Freesia create the illusion of “standing” on their stems are thus perfect for cascading wedding bouquets, arches, or wedding centerpieces.
Gerbera Daisies
These wide flowers have sturdy stems that make them easy to work with and beautiful bright petals that effortlessly livens up any wedding bouquet, floral arrangement or centerpiece. Bigger than regular daisies, Gerbera daisies come in a variety of bright, juicy colors including: pink, red, orange, yellow and even white.
Marigolds
Used more for their medicinal benefits than bouquets, marigolds are beautiful flowers. They have long singular stems that can grow up to three feet all and brightly colored petals in various colors of yellow, orange and sometimes red that form in very densely atop the stem. Rudbeckia
These sunny flowers have a natural earthy and rustic tone to them that pairs perfectly with fall weddings. They have a prominent, raised disc in the center that can either be black, brown, shades of green and are surrounded by bright yellow petals that hang downward. This flower is more often referred to as Black-eyed Susans.
Sedum/Stonecrop
These large, sturdy, plants produce clusters of star-shaped flowers in shades of pink, yellow, red, and white. Because they hold their shape so well, they contribute texture and fine tuned details to wedding bouquets and floral arrangements.
